The first short story of 2026 opens with the theme of the duality of the human soul set against the backdrop of a cramped apartment bathroom. Bedřich, a man living on the fringes of society, destroyed by alcohol and self-hatred, confronts his own reflection. His desperate desire for redemption and the separation of “good” from “evil” results in a supernatural and fatal twist. The story is a variation on the classic doppelganger motif, this time blending harsh social realism with medieval cruelty.
